In 2005, Israel agreed to completely withdraw any forces or communities from Gaza. Israeli forces forcibly removed 21 Israeli communities in the Gaza Strip, razing their homes and physically removing civilians when necessary. Israel offered the displaced population housing of equal value in Israel.

And once Israel, in a prelude to a peace agreement, had completely left Gaza, Hamas was voted in to run the government.

Their charter hadn’t yet changed from “to kill all the Jews is a holy act” and “a Free Palestine depends on freeing it from the Jews” to “our only problem is with the zionist entity.”

A reminder: Deligitimizing Jewish or Palestinian connections to the homeland is a bad look. Peace is the right look. Let’s focus on that.
